A possible World War II-era grenade discovered during a basement cleanup at a Bethpage home prompted a response from the Arson Bomb Squad on Wednesday morning.
According to investigators, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, when a 60-year-old woman was cleaning the basement of her home and found what appeared to be a suspicious explosive device.
Responding officers secured the area and requested assistance from the Nassau County Emergency Services Unit and Arson Bomb Squad Detectives.
After examining the item, bomb squad investigators determined it was potentially a World War II-style grenade. The device was safely secured, transported to a secure location, and destroyed without incident.
Neighbors say they were surprised by the large police presence.
"Very quiet neighborhood. A lot of families and kids and stuff like that," Jeanne Chillianis said. "I've been here 32 years and nothing crazy like that has happened here."
Authorities said there is no further risk to the public.
The investigation remains ongoing.
