Work already underway to build new three-stop lift elevator at a Long Beach church
The entrances are all surrounded by stairs on both the side entrance and in the front, making it difficult for many parishioners to get in and out of the building.
One Nassau church will soon be more accessible.
Work is now underway for a new three-stop lift elevator at St. James of Jerusalem in Long Beach.
The entrances are all surrounded by stairs on both the side entrance and in the front, making it difficult for many parishioners to get in and out of the building.
Once complete, this elevator will give them access to the sanctuary and program rooms.
"When people are coming in a wheelchair, they can't get in the church. People need to feel comfortable," says vicar Michael Delaney. "It's really going to make us honor what the church has been saying for centuries - 'All are welcome.'"
The $107,000 project was made possible in part by a Nassau County ARPA grant and local donors.
They're hoping it will be up and running by the end of the month.
