Six swimmers are now safe after having been reported in distress off the Robert Moses State Park shore.
Suffolk fire officials say the West Islip Fire Department responded just before 8:30 p.m. for swimmers in distress near Field 2.
A preliminary report from park officials shows that one individual originally got into distress. Two other people from the shoreline then went out to help and also got caught.
Three off-duty lifeguards who were surfing nearby got the three individuals out.
All swimmers made it back to shore.
