The historic Smithtown Theater is up for sale, and measures are being taken to save it.
The theater is 90 years old and can be found right in the heart of Smithtown’s Main Street. What began as an ornate movie house is now filled with historic artifacts, décor and decades of memories.
“That’s why we are trying everything we can,” said Joanne Blum, of Smithtown. “We are trying everything we can to really keep the doors open, keep the shows going and keep the lights on in Smithtown.”
The theater was built in 1933 by the designers of Rockefeller Center.
The nonprofit group that runs the Smithtown Performing Arts Center is holding benefit performances this Saturday, Sept. 18.
