Fireworks lit up the skies above Jones Beach as hundreds of thousands attended a beloved Fourth of July tradition on Long Island.
New York State Parks officials say close to 200,000 people came to Jones Beach Friday, and say that all parking lots were at capacity by the fireworks show.
Cynthia Foulke, of Huntington, says her and her family have come to Jones Beach on the Fourth of July for decades.
“The fireworks are beautiful,” she said. “They always have a good display and everything so we just stay here.”
NYS Parks Long Island Regional Director George Gorman says they are already on track for high attendance this weekend.
"We were projecting a half a million visitors for Long Island State Parks through the three-day weekend period,” he said. “We’re going to hit that tomorrow about mid-afternoon.”
From the boardwalks to the beach, there was also a large State Police presence.
Earlier this week, Gov. Hochul said more state resources are being used for safety this holiday weekend.
NYS Police Troop L Zone 1 Commander Capt. Vincent Augeri said they are increasing patrols and their presence at mass gathering events.
"We do have bolstered patrols. We have extra manpower available,” he said. “We also have division level assets that came from upstate to assist us down here on Long Island."
All the extra safety in place to ensure a fun and safe celebration of America.
