A prominent advocate in the fight against deed theft is now behind bars on Rikers Island, prompting outrage from supporters who are calling for her release.

According to her attorneys, Carmella Charrington was taken into custody Thursday during an appearance at Kings County Civil Supreme Court in connection to the conservatorship of her father in Georgia.

Her attorneys said they were not present at the hearing and are calling her detention unlawful.

They told News 12 they requested an adjournment, but the judge proceeded with the case and held Charrington in contempt for failing to produce her elderly father in court.

Her father, who partially owns the property on Jefferson Avenue, has been living with Charrington for the past two years after leaving Georgia.

Charrington has previously told News 12 she believes a family member who does not maintain the home improperly sold the property.

The multimillion-dollar brownstone at the center of the dispute has been the focus of multiple legal challenges over the years, with repeated efforts to remove Charrington from the home.

Following her arrest, community members have begun rallying in support of her.
