A jury awarded $25 million to a former Bay Shore student who they found to be sexually abused by a staff member, according to the district superintendent.
The district confirmed that the payment is related to the accusations against former teacher Thomas Bernagozzi.
The 76-year-old is charged in two cases of sexually abusing students. At least 45 other former students have filed lawsuits against Bernagozzi and the district.
Bernagozzi left the district in 2003.
