Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi issued a memo Thursday that aims to revamp county policy on lights and sirens in government vehicles, but some believe it won't change much.
In January, Suozzi was surrounded by controversy after his county-owned car got into an accident in Greenvale. The car driving Suozzi used its lights and sirens to run a red light and wound up hitting another vehicle. In response, the county executive's memo says only law enforcement personnel can use emergency lights and sirens. It continues by saying all county cars not used by police will have the equipment removed.
Of the seven high-ranking officers who have equipped vehicles, only two will lose the privilege under the policy shift. They are Comptroller Howard Weitzman and Civil Service Commissioner Carl Campe. Weitzman says he never intended to use the emergency lights even before Suozzi changed the policy.
