State Sen. Monica Martinez has conceded to Republican Alexis Weik in the race for the state Senate's 3rd District.
Martinez released a statement Wednesday, saying, "It has been an honor to have served the residents of the Third Senate District for the past two years. First and foremost, I'd like to thank God and my family for the strength and love they have provided me."
The concession comes shortly after Suffolk Republicans declared victory for Weik in the race nearly a month after Election Day.
"It's from the heart and it was a cause I believed in and I'm so very glad the people who lived in the district that I've lived in my whole life feel the same way I do, and I'm so proud to be able to represent them in Albany.," says Weik.
Martinez added that "I am certain I will see you soon" and wished Weik lucked in the state Senate seat.
The 3rd District includes parts of Brookhaven and Islip.
