The Suffolk and Nassau County police departments took part in National Coffee with a Cop Day Wednesday to better foster communication and relationships between law enforcement officials and the citizens they serve.

Suffolk police hosted several events, including at the Sayville Bean Coffee House and the Smith Haven Mall. Officers also stopped by Home Depot in Bay Shore, where Inspector Michael Kelly said the event was an important step in building strong relationships in the community.

"People are coming up and just saying how nice it is and showing support for us, and we can say thank you for the support that they've shown," Kelly said. "It's also a nice way people can tell us about problems they have that they wouldn't call 911 for, so it's a really nice way to get out into the community."

Nassau police hosted their 10th annual event at The Perk and Press in Massapequa, where attendees met with members of the department and had the opportunity to sip free coffee and enjoy treats.

The Port Washington Police Department also took part, hosting an event at Ayhan's Mediterranean Marketplace.
