Cancer survivors joined doctors and officials Wednesday at the Hewlett House to encourage early screening this Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Hewlett House is a community learning and resource center for cancer patients and their families operated by 1 in 9, a nonprofit that has been fighting cancer since 1990, according to its website. The event served as a way to encourage early screening, outline the organization's mission and celebrate the Hewlett House's 25th anniversary.
There are several initiatives and events planned for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the dome of the Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola will be lit pink in recognition.
Officials say 42,000 women have been treated at the Hewlett House over the last quarter century.
