The Suffolk Legislature approved County Executive Steve Bellone's Septic Improvement Program Tuesday.
The measure would provide up to $11,000 to homeowners to replace old septic systems with state-of-the-art nitrogen reducing systems.
In addition to the grant, homeowners can apply for low-interest financing to pay for the remainder of the system.
About 400 residents will be selected to receive the funding in the first two years of the program.
The application process is set to begin on July 1.
