Staffers at the Stony Brook University Medical Center Burn Center received special honors from local firefighters Sunday.
The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund gave out eight awards, including one for top nurse. Patricia Manzella received that prize.
"I picture everybody as if they were a family member," Manzella said of her approach with burn patients.
The Stony Brook center treats about 1,100 burn victims yearly and is Suffolk County's only such center. The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund has given money to the center for research and treatment since 1986.
