Middle school students learned to use the power of wind in an engineering competition.

The KidWind Challenge was held Wednesday at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. The competition is in its fifth year.

More than 140 young engineers took part in the competition based around STEM, an educational program developed to prepare students for college and graduate study in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The competition challenged the participants to design functioning wind turbines and to compete against their peers in developing the most creative one.

To monitor the turbines, the students used online data files.

"They're measuring the output of voltage and the amperage and amount of power that's put out," said teacher David Driscoll.
