More than 100 people in Nassau and Suffolk counties are currently being monitored for possible exposure to the novel coronavirus.

With new cases reported every day, there is a lot of worry and fear over coronavirus becoming a global pandemic.

While there are cases in the United States and around the globe, there are no cases on the island or in the state.

County officials say they have protocols in place to try and deal with the scare.

Both counties get a daily list from the CDC with the names of people who might have been exposed.

 

The Nassau and Suffolk health departments then verify the information and make contact with the individuals. People who may have been exposed are then told to voluntarily isolate themselves as the health department conducts daily check-ins.

"We're doing more than just temperature. We're doing symptom reviews. So we would like to know if you have other symptoms as well. If you've developed a cough. If you've developed a sore throat. And in the event that somebody does develop any symptoms while they're in a period of monitoring we make arrangements for that individual to then be tested under controlled circumstances," said Debbie Kimelstein, the Nassau Health Department Communicable Disease Control director.

Nassau is now currently monitoring 78 people who are in voluntary isolation. In Suffolk, 29 people are being monitored and are in voluntary isolation.
