Storm causes holiday travel woes at area airports

A powerful storm disrupted one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season, causing widespread delays and cancellations at area airports.

Heavy rain and strong winds made flying difficult throughout the day, leaving many passengers frustrated and uncertain about when they would reach their destinations. At LaGuardia Airport alone, more than 100 flights were canceled, and over 300 were delayed on Friday.

Among those affected was Carlota Romero, whose flight to Los Angeles was canceled. She said she is now unsure if she will be able to travel at all.

“We’re trying to see if there are other flights,” Romero said. “Even if it’s not today, maybe tomorrow. But according to how things are, we may not be able to go.”

Long lines and extended wait times added to the stress for travelers, many of whom arrived early, hoping to avoid problems on the busy holiday travel day. Instead, some spent hours waiting inside the terminal with little information about their flights.

“It’s kind of frustrating because we showed up early and were just standing here waiting,” said passenger Nathan Gaddie. “You’ve got other people who want to see you during the holidays, so it’s important to get home—and get home safe.”

His grandmother, Sandy Gaddie, summed up the feeling shared by many travelers.

“Right now, we just feel a little stranded," she said.

Airport officials and airlines are urging passengers scheduled to fly to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Travelers are also advised to allow extra time for check-in and security.
