New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman joined local leaders in Hauppauge Thursday to urge lawmakers to act more aggressive to combat the flow of guns into the state.
As News 12 Long Island has reported, of the more than 4,800 recovered guns used in Long Island crimes between 2010 and 2015, 73 percent came from outside New York.
Among his suggestions, the attorney general wants to require universal background checks for gun sales.
"We can't do this alone, no state can do this alone," said Schneiderman. "We need the federal government to step up, we need governments in other states to step up."
He says the data shows that New York's gun laws are working.
