At least 40 cats have been removed from squalid living conditions at a home in North Bellmore that, as of Tuesday, has been condemned.
A neighbor, Erin Urbanski, says since 2017 she and her neighbors have begged Hempstead Town officials to help with the sickening smell of cat urine as well as the dozens of cats that were defecating on their lawns and lying dead in the streets.
Town of Hempstead officials say the supervisors office was only recently contacted about the cat problem and the legal process to get into the home takes time.
Nassau County SPCA officials say they believe there could be up to another 50 cats that still need to be rescued.
Rescuers
say many of the cats are now being treated for respiratory infections, eye
infections and other health issues.
A
local animal shelter has set safe traps to help capture the rest of the
animals.
