Residents in Southampton say they?ll be able to conserve energy and money after the town rescinded a ban on clotheslines Thursday.
The ban originally passed in 2002 because some neighbors complained the clotheslines made the town look shabby. Penalties for violating the ban included a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail.
?We weren't really happy with code enforcement running around enforcing a clothesline law, so we thought it would be appropriate to remove that restriction," Southampton Supervisor Linda Kabot said.
One homemaker said putting up with looking at clotheslines is worth what she?ll save by letting her laundry air dry.
While the town is giving town residents the green light for clotheslines, it still says no to clotheslines in business or commercial districts.
