A South Plainfield family says their flood insurance company will not cover repair expenses after Ida flooded their home with up to 9 feet of water.

The Boyne Family lives in a neighborhood that is considered a flood zone and will be rebuilding for months.

"In the moment, it's tough to feel. I mean, me, my wife, my son, we're in the basement trying to just get the water out, get the water, and finally just got to a point started coming over the electric," Greg Boyne says.

They had to admit defeat as the floodwaters destroyed the basement and the first floor along with the furniture, water heater, furnace, air conditioning and more.

"Watching everything float away was really tough and devastating to me, did a lot of crying," Liana Boyne says.

They are eager to rebuild so they started the process with their flood insurance company, but the company said they were not covered.

"The reason I didn't have flood insurance is, although I've been making my escrow payments and paying my mortgage company, through the negligence of my mortgage company, they failed to make the payments to my flood insurance," Greg Boyne explains.

As it turned out, the mortgage company didn't pay the insurance company back in in May.

The Boynes say they were never notified about any missed payments.

Now the insurance company is telling Greg Boyne that he is out of luck and the mortgage company is not responding to his inquiries.

"I gotta get hot water back to my house, I gotta get air conditioning, I got a child that's gotta go to school," Greg Boyne says.

And Greg Boyne has to work as a career firefighter.

News 12 New Jersey reached out to the mortgage and insurance companies but did not hear back.
