Police say one man has died following a police-involved shooting Tuesday in East Northport.
They say they responded to the scene when a neighbor reported a man acting violent in a home on Mander Lane at 8:45 p.m. When officers arrived, 54-year-old Alan Weber refused to come outside and was screaming and breaking items in the home.
Police say Weber confronted them with two swords. An officer then fired shots and struck Weber.
Weber was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbors tell News 12 that a resident on Mander Lane had been struggling with mental health issues. The neighbor added that officers had been called to the home multiple times on Tuesday and that things escalated, ending in a shooting.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison says he reviewed body camera footage and believes the shooting was “justified.”
“The officers demanded he put the swords down, our subject refused to do such, at which time our officers fired the Taser striking our subject,” Harrison says. “The Taser did not have an effect on our subject, at which time he charged at our officers. Our other officer that was there at the scene pulled out his firearm and shot several times at our subject, and our subject went down.”
