Customers and consumer advocates are warning Long Island residents about a company they say is scamming homeowners.
John Davis, a first-time homebuyer, purchased a 50-year-old Wyandanch home through the Web site Homes for Less. He says the company told him the house was good as new inside and out and that he wouldn?t need to do anything to the house for 10 to 15 years.
According to Davis, the home needed a new boiler and new electrical wiring within days. He says the windows were rotted, the roof was moldy and the cesspool backed up sewage into the house. He and his wife say they spent thousands on repairs.
Sandra Cochran, of Wyandanch Community Development, says she has fielded similar complaints against Homes for Less.
?This is one of the worst predatory lending situations that I've seen in the past couple of years,? Cochran says. She advises home buyers to hire their own engineers to make sure the house is in move-in condition. She also says not to use the seller?s appraiser.
Calls placed to Homes for Less were not returned.
