The latest blast of winter weather to hit the tri-state area left the Village of Asharoken virtually cut off from the rest of the Island Sunday.
The waves came crashing over Asharoken Avenue. According to Mayor Bill Kelly, the North Shore village had worked with the Army Corps of Engineers to shore up the coast with seven-ton boulders. At one point, the roads had to be closed down.
The mayor said when the rainy snow started Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, smaller rocks that were at the bottom of the retaining wall were washed onto the road.
Road crews spent the day plowing rocks, not snow. Officials hoped the high tide hour would be more merciful.
The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory for the area earlier and high winds and cold weather were expected to continue into Monday.
However, the mayor said Monday morning?s high tide isn?t expected to be as bad, because the wind has shifted.
