A group of teens are skating toward a big goal, all for a good cause in Dix Hills.
Dozens gathered at a local rink to support Team CUREage and raise money for Blood Cancer United, to turn an afternoon of skating into a powerful show of community and compassion.
“We thought it would be a great place to come together. It’s fun,” said Natalie Lacher.
That spirit of togetherness was on full display as skaters laced up with one shared mission: to help find a cure for blood cancer. Team CUREage is made up of 27 teens from across the East Coast, including several from Long Island, all working toward that goal.
Avery Sherman, also of Dix Hills, said the campaign opened her eyes to just how many families are impacted by the disease.
“Through this campaign I saw many people you wouldn’t know are affected that were, and it’s really impactful,” she said.
Sherman's grandfather died of blood cancer in 2022. She said she has channeled her grief into action to help others who are facing similar battles. Cancer has also impacted Lacher’s family.
“My aunt had lung cancer and my grandma had breast cancer. Watching them fight inspired me to become a part of this organization,” she said.
The team has hosted multiple fundraising events over the past several months with an ambitious six-figure goal. At Sunday’s skate event, members sold merchandise and drinks to move closer to their target ahead of their March 19 deadline. It's a milestone they say is well within reach.
For many who attended, the event was about more than fundraising.
“I’m having a great time out here. I really enjoy skating. My sister Lily is out here too. I like how everyone came together to support this cause,” said Gavin Zwirn.
