A father-daughter duo is fighting fires together and serving the community in Floral Park.
Patricia Luger followed in her father Gil Luger's footsteps and became a volunteer firefighter at the Floral Park Fire Department.
"I grew up in the firehouse," says Patricia Luger. "Just to do this together has been incredible."
"She's an inspiration in the department. She's achieved levels that other people have not," says Gil Luger.
Gil has been with the department for 49 years. Patricia has been a volunteer for the past 25 years.
"It's just a bond that we've been able to share," says Patricia Luger.
They say it's always special to be working together.
"The praises that she gets through the fire academy, through all the instructors, not only for being a really good firefighter, but for being a mentor, it makes me really proud," says Gil Luger
"Having that opportunity to grow up here and then become a part of the department with him and serve our community has been completely rewarding," says Patricia Luger.
The Lugers say that at a time when recruiting firefighters is tough, they hope their story serves as an inspiration to others.
"Being able to work together to be there for your neighbors, I think, is so important," says Patricia Luger.
