(05/30/08) NEW YORK - The New York City medical examiner says a second person has died as a result of the construction crane collapse on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
The medical examiner's spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove, says the victim was a 27-year-old man, Ramadan Kurtas. The accident Friday also killed the crane's operator, identified as 30-year-old Donald Leo of Staten Island. A third construction worker was seriously injured, and one pedestrian was treated for minor injuries.
The construction crane smashed into a nearby 23-story apartment building as it crashed onto the street below.
City building department records show that inspectors stopped crane work twice last month, once because they said a crane lacked the proper permit and was being operated in an unsafe manner.
It was the second deadly crane accident in 2 and a half months in the city, which is undergoing a building boom. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the latest collapse was "unacceptable," and the city would investigate. The general contractor on the project is Leon D. DeMatteis Construction Corp. of Elmont.
