The Coast Guard and multiple police departments have suspended their search for a missing boater whose boat was found grounded with a dog aboard.
The missing boater has been identified as Ralph Fletcher, 58.
Authorities say Fletcher's 21-foot boat was found around 7:30 p.m. Saturday off the shoreline near Sands Point with personal items aboard, including his cellphone, wallet and keys. A dog was also aboard the boat, officials say.
Fletcher is described as a white man who stands 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds with a medium build. He has a light complexion, gray hair and hazel eyes, and was last seen wearing a bathing suit.
Multiple agencies along the coast of the Long Island Sound from Nassau to Westchester and Connecticut were participating in a search for him over the weekend, but the search was suspended around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Fletcher in this difficult time,” Capt. Michael Day, commander of the Coast Guard Sector New York Command Center, said in a statement. “Suspending a search is never an easy call to make and [it] was made with deep consideration in this tragic case.”
The Coast Guard is urging boaters to file a float plan with family or friends prior to heading out on the water.
Nassau police are urging anyone who may have seen Fletcher to call the Missing Persons Squad at 516-573-7347 or to call 911.
