The Riverhead Central School District confirmed Friday that pepper spray was used during a fight between two high school students that took place in a school hallway.
School district officials say the fumes from that pepper spray also impacted security guards and students who were nearby. They say those who had trouble breathing were monitored and received medical attention at the scene.
The district says the student who sprayed the pepper spray was taken into police custody.
The incident follows another one within the district where two knives and a BB gun were confiscated in June at Riverhead Middle School.
All areas affected by the pepper spray were cleaned and classes resumed as usual.
