Hottest summer on record (so far) for Long Island
Long Island is shattering heat records so far this summer. The climate on the Island is shifting.
It's not your imagination; Long Island has been shattering hot weather records this summer. The first two-thirds of summer has been the hottest on record for Islip, and it's not just the summertime. This year has been filled with unprecedented heat. It's something we've been reporting over and over again the past few years.

Record-shattering June heat

June 2025 was the hottest on record for Islip. We had our first 100 degree June day on record when temperatures soared to 101 degrees in the middle of an unprecedented heat wave on June 24. Temps of 100 degrees are rare on Long Island. The last time we hit 100 degrees was July 2011, and June 24's heat tied for the hottest day this century. It was just 3 degrees shy of the all-time heat record for Islip.
The average afternoon high in June 2025 was 80 degrees, and the average morning low was 64 degrees. That's more than 3 degrees higher than the climatological average for the month. Rain was erratic in June. Only 1.88 inches fell at Islip (the average is 4 inches), but flash flooding was reported in other parts of the tri-state area.

July heat & humidity

July 2025 is nearly tied with July 1999 for the hottest on record. It will ultimately come down to a few tenths of a degree. We will officially have those numbers when the calendar switches to August. One thing we know for sure is that we broke numerous new hot weather records.

Daily heat records broken

July 1: Low 73 degrees (old record was 72 degrees)
July 9: Low 74 degrees (a tie)
July 14: Low 74 degrees (a tie)
July 17: Low 79 degrees (old record was 75 degrees)
July 30: Low 76 degrees (record tied)
July 30: High 96 degrees (old record was 95 degrees)

Our weather is getting hotter

So far this year, we've broken or tied 21 hot weather records. We've only broken or tied two cold weather records. In addition to our hottest June day on record, Islip also had its hottest March day on record. Temperatures soared to 82 degrees in March 2025. The gap between 80 degree days was less than four months, the shortest gap on record. November 2024 hit 80 degrees for only the second time on record (the first time was 2022).
Our weather is simply getting hotter on Long Island. Our five hottest June months on record have happened since 1999. Our top five hottest July months have also happened since 1999. Four out of five of our hottest August average temperatures have happened since 2005.
Records for Islip go back to 1964.
