Roosevelt names Dr. Deborah Wortham first locally elected school superintendent in 11 years
Dr. Deborah Wortham has become the first locally elected Roosevelt School District superintendent in 11 years.
In a controversial move that made national headlines, the state took over the school district back in 2002 due to a high dropout rate, fiscal mismanagement, high teacher turnover and a failure to meet performance standards.
But on July 1, the local district will regain control from Albany for the first time in more than a decade. That same day, Wortham will step into her new position.
Wortham has worked in Baltimore and is currently a superintendent in Pennsylvania.
