Island Harvest is hoping this year’s "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive will collect 500,000 pounds of food for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.

People like Donna Bach-Heitner, of East Meadow, are pitching in to help feed the hungry.

"There are a lot of people among us that fall on hard times or they need a little help," she said.

Saturday marked the National Association of Letter Carriers' annual "Stamp Out Hunger" event. Residents in Nassau and Suffolk leave food out to be collected by the United States Postal Service, which will then be distributed to food pantries across the island.

Island Harvest Food Bank says 221,000 Long Islanders are considered food insecure.

"We're seeing longer lines at food pantries. Prices are going up for everything from gas to insurance to groceries – people are really struggling to make ends meet," said Amanda Chirco, with Island Harvest.
