A judge handed down the maximum sentence Friday to a Roosevelt man convicted of killing an anti-gang activist.
Tyrel Cason, 24, was ordered to serve 5-15 years for manslaughter. An additional 15-year sentence was handed down for a weapons possession charge. The sentences will be served consecutively, which means Cason will be behind bars for the next 20-30 years.
Cason shot and killed former gang member turned activist Hykiem Coney last October outside the Image bar on Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale. Cason admitted to firing seven shots into a crowd, but maintained he never intended to kill anyone.
An attorney for Cason said the separate charges stem from one incident and, therefore, should be included in one sentence. They plan to file an appeal.
