A Ridge man with multiple sclerosis received $2.25 million in damages last week in a medical malpractice suit against Stony Brook University Medical Center.
Tom Burke, 65, says the suit stemmed from an incident eight years ago, when he went to the emergency room complaining of leg pain and swelling. Burke said he was sent home by Dr. Wesley Carrion, only to return the following morning. By that time, his leg was too damaged to be saved, and a different orthopedic surgeon was forced to amputate it.
Burke?s attorney says if action had been taken by Carrion, his client?s leg would have been spared.
The New York State Department of found that the doctor didn?t properly monitor Burke?s leg, thereby denying him proper access to medical care.
