A Woodbridge police sergeant has been indicted in connection with a fatal police-involved shooting that happened last year.

A state grand jury charged Sgt. Marco Bruno with first-degree aggravated manslaughter in the death of 35-year-old Aamir Allen, of Carteret. The indictment comes nearly a year after the May 29, 2025, incident.

Prosecutors say officers were called to East Tappen Street in Woodbridge after multiple 911 calls reporting a man assaulting people with a baseball bat. When officers arrived, they encountered Allen in the roadway holding the bat and repeatedly ordered him to drop it.

According to investigators, Allen did not comply and walked away as officers followed. He later stopped near a closed convenience store, still holding the bat, as officers continued giving commands.

Authorities say Sgt. Bruno arrived shortly after and, after also ordering Allen to drop the bat, fired six shots, striking him. Allen was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he later died.

The case was investigated by the state Attorney General’s Office. After reviewing evidence, including body camera footage, surveillance video and 911 calls, the grand jury decided to bring the charge.

If convicted, Bruno could face 10 to 30 years in prison.
