Residents protested in Merrick Sunday about American Water's proposed water rate hike.
The protesters said they are tired of paying for subpar water quality and want a public water municipality.
Residents say the 8.3 percent rate hike affecting many South Shore communities is unreasonable. Organizers of the rally say they are already paying three times more than their neighbors with public water.
"It's crazy, we get bills for $200 to $240 and we don't even drink the water," said Ellen Ambrecht, of Merrick.
Residents said they are also are tired of footing the bill for American Water's property taxes, and feel going public will cut costs.
The president for American Water says the rate hike is necessary for infrastructure projects addressing water quality issues, including a temporary iron removal plant in Roosevelt.
Two public hearings are scheduled for this Wednesday.
