A new report from California's Public Health Department is warning people about the health risks of keeping cellphones too close to the body.
The department says about 95 percent of all Americans carry a cellphone, which emit radio waves that some studies show can be dangerous.
And while there is no direct connection between cellphone use and health risks like cancer, the department has released guidelines about harmful cellphone radiation and how to avoid it.
The guidelines urge users not to carry their phones in their pockets or hands for extended periods of time and to sleep with their devices at least an arm's length away. They also say users should limit audio and video streaming and reduce phone use when the signal is weak.
Some Long Islanders say they'll take the advice to heart, like Ray Weinstein of Syosset.
"I don't know if it's really that necessary, but it can't hurt," he says.
Others seemed unconvinced.
"It is what it is," says Michael Rittenhouse of Farmingville. "You're addicted to it like everybody else."
