Rep. Peter King says Amy Coney Barrett is a great pick for the high court, noting that the nominee and his daughter, former Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, went to law school together at Notre Dame.
"She was the smartest person in the room and worked harder than anyone," King Sweeney told News 12 on Saturday.
President Donald Trump nominated Barrett, a conservative, as his choice to the Supreme Court to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg– who championed liberal causes and equal rights since her appointment in 1993.
If Barrett is confirmed, Rep. King says she’s “going to be interpreting the laws that Congress passes and what the Founding Fathers wrote in the Constitution."
King Sweeney says it speaks to Barrett's character that she's currently a circuit court judge and Notre Dame law professor, as well as a mother of seven children.
"Frankly, I think it would be someone, a pick that Justice Ginsburg would be proud of," she said.
According to NPR, Justice Ginsburg knew that a political battle was looming over her seat and dictated a statement to her granddaughter before she died: "My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."
