A total of 82 Long Islanders from 30 households were displaced in just over a week, following a string of house fires, according to the American Red Cross.
The organization responded to six fire emergencies between Dec. 18 and Dec 26.
Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro says there has been a noticeable uptick in residential fires.
Uttaro says the fires in the week leading up to Christmas were an unfortunate coincidence. However, he says several can be blamed on space heaters and extension cords.
Uttaro says you should have plenty of working smoke detectors inside your home.
