Protesters rallied outside of the Suffolk County Police Department's 3rd Precinct today in honor of a man who died in police custody seven years ago.
Jennifer Gonzalez says Kenny Lazo, of North Bay Shore, was her boyfriend and the father of their son. Lazo died after he was arrested on drug charges, and Gonzalez says photos taken after his arrest show evidence of police abuse.
Police have said that they had to use force on Lazo when he tried to grab an officer's gun during a struggle.
A grand jury declined to charge the five officers who were involved in the case. A civil case against the officers will be heard by a judge in July.
As protesters rallied, Suffolk police took their own precautions today, stationing officers outside along with cameras and barricades.
Attorney Fred Brewington, who is representing the Lazo family, questioned the level of surveillance. "Do police need to be prepared and do they need to be cautious? Absolutely. But they also don't need to make the community the enemy," he said.
Suffolk police declined to comment for this story today.
