City officials
announced Wednesday plans for a new soccer stadium for New York City Football Club, more affordable housing and increased union jobs in Willets Point.
Mayor Eric Adams, along with his constituents, are moving forward with a project that’s been on the table for years. NYCFC has been playing in multiple stadiums since its inception.
“This will cement Queens' reputation as a world-class sports destination,” said Adams. “Soon we will have New York City Football Club, the Mets, Citi Field and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center located side by side.”
The project, which will be 100% privately financed, will bring 2,500 units of 100% affordable housing to the area as well as a hotel and a 650-seat K-8 public school. It is also expected to provide 14,200 all-union construction jobs to build the stadium and hotel. The revitalization of the neighborhood could bring 1,550 permanent jobs to the area.
The Willets Point transformation plan will need to go through the uniform land use review procedure process and be passed by the City Council in early 2023.
Construction is expected to begin and be completed by the 2027 season for the team.
