The Atlantic County prosecutor is praising the quick actions of law enforcement officials who responded to a shooting at a high school football game.
Among those who responded was off-duty Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Nina Mitchell who was just stopping by the Pleasantville/Camden high school game Friday night in Pleasantville.
“As I drove up, I could see all the kids, all the kids just running out,” she says. “The adults, trying to get over the fence because they couldn’t find an exit to get out.”
Mitchell says that she quickly ran over to render aid to anyone who needed it, while also directing the students were to run to safety.
“I basically just pointed them in the opposite direction of me as I was running in,” she says.
It was during the third quarter of the game when the gunfire erupted near the stands. An adult and 10-year-old boy were hit and another child was grazed. No one on the field was injured.
Pleasantville Police Officer Jon Marshall Robinson took down the alleged shooter.
“I immediately went after him and I was able to apprehend him behind the goalpost near the tennis courts,” Robinson says. “Once I caught him, I ordered him to get down on the ground. His face was just - it told me everything that I needed to know.”
Prosecutor Damon Tyner says that it was the officers’ quick-thinking that stopped the situation from becoming worse.
“Without that swift action, without that collaboration, we simply would not have been able to wrap this case up as quickly as we did that evening.”
Six people, including the adult victim, are facing a variety of charges related to the shooting.
The Philadelphia Eagles have offered to host the remaining minutes of the Pleasantville/Camden at Lincoln Financial Field. It will take place on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The game will be closed to the public.
