Suffolk County was given $5 million from the federal government Friday to help with the construction on a new bridge to Fire Island.
The new structure will replace the 65-year-old Smith Point Bridge in Shirley.
Suffolk County officials were given the green light to build a new bridge in 2022.
The project is expected to be complete by 2027.
