What started as a simple warrant for a probation violation could lock a Wading River man up for life.
Wade Booth was arraigned on attempted murder and weapons charges Thursday after holding police at bay during an 11-hour standoff Wednesday. Police showed up at the home of the 46-year-old Booth to issue a warrant for failing to undergo psychiatric, psychological and medical evaluations as per his probation agreement for assaulting a police officer. They say Booth responded by firing a shot through the front door that barely missed the head of Suffolk Detective Joe Thomas. Thomas suffered non-life-threatening injuries when shards of glass sprayed in his face.
Emergency service officers say numerous canisters of pepper spray were fired into the home, but Booth refused to give up until heavily armed officers entered the home and found him in the closet. Booth faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
