Boaters and fishermen who use the Port Jefferson Marina spoke out against a proposal that could slash the number of trailer parking spaces in Brookhaven Town's lot at a meeting Monday night.

An agreement between Port Jefferson Village and the town would let regular cars use the extra-long trailer spaces to add more regular parking.

The two municipalities are trading parking spaces to allow for the redevelopment of the long-vacant tax receiver's building in the middle of the village. 

The village would gain 30 parking spaces in the town-owned lot in exchange for eight village-owned spaces closer to the building. Currently, those town spaces are reserved for boaters.

Virginia Capon, a boater and lifelong resident of Port Jefferson, says she does not think the plan will adequately address the village's parking shortage.

"This agreement is not solving our parking woes," Capon says. "It's just adding to the problem."

Michael Mart, another Port Jefferson resident, has a different problem with the proposal. He says he's worried the change in parking rules will negatively impact his quality of life if people are noisy in the parking lot.

"On a few occasions, we've had to call the constable because people were making noise, and the response was to make them leave," Mart says. "So this proposal will disrupt the quiet we've been guaranteed."
