Police say a man in his 80s shot himself in North Bellmore and his family then buried him in a shallow grave behind his home.
Police are not sure when the man committed suicide but believe it was within the past 48 hours.
Nassau Police Chief of Detectives Kevin Smith says they got a tip from someone unrelated to the family. Crime scene investigators had descended on the Pea Pond Road property Thursday.
"He wanted to be buried on the property," says Smith. "And that is what we found."
Police have not released the man's identity but say he was a decorated war veteran who served in Vietnam and possibly Korea.
Neighbors say the man lived in the home with his elderly wife. Investigators say he may have been suffering from cancer.
It is not yet clear if anyone will face charges or a fine, as there is an ordinance against burying bodies in a residential area.
The body was taken to the medical examiner's office.
