A 16-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark in Kismet on Fire Island Wednesday evening.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers responded to calls of a shark bite at around 5:45 p.m.
They say Max Haynes, of Islip, suffered a minor bite on his foot and was able to walk out of the water.
News 12's Kevin Vesey spoke to Haynes outside of Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip where he had his foot bandaged up.
"I was a little shaken up before but really I'm just tired - I've had a long day," Haynes said after being discharged from the hospital.
Haynes says he just had his legs dangling in the water trying to catch a few waves.
"But then just out of nowhere - this thing just like latched onto my foot," Haynes said. "And I held on for a few seconds and it was just crazy."
He says he was laughing a little bit because he couldn't believe what was happening.
Haynes suffered puncture wounds on his foot and a gash on his toe.
He will be getting stitches on Friday.
Haynes says he will be back in the water "as soon as possible."
