Some Liberty Water customers in Oceanside say their bills have spiked in recent months since the company installed new water meters.

"I have a knot in my stomach," said one neighbor after her bill increased from $30 to over $250 within a year. "I’m a single person living in this home. I don’t even water the grass. All I do is my laundry and shower."

Ratepayers previously voiced their anger over high-water bills and repeated main breaks under Liberty utilities in July at a public meeting in Lynbrook. Customers say they're paying up to five times more than their neighbors who receive water from public sources.

"I have friends in Mineola that pay $45 every three months, if that," said a customer named Daniel.

He says his bill has increased in price by over 125% in one month alone. His last bill was nearly $300.

According to Liberty Water, the summer is the peak season for water usage, which explains the higher bills.

"Liberty regularly educates customers on water conservation, especially irrigation best practices, which lowers water usage and bills," the company said in statement to News 12.

Some customers have complained that their water usage has not increased, but their bills have.

The utility included a list of ways to conserve water on its website.
