Residents on one block in Port Washington are breathing a sigh of relief tonight following the end of a lockdown that was caused by a man who barricaded himself inside his home.
Neighbors say a woman went to police at around 4 p.m. yesterday, saying she had a fight with her husband and he wanted to kill himself. When officers responded to the home at 48 Essex Court, the man refused to come out.
A part of Essex Court was closed off for hours while police negotiated with the man, and neighbors were urged to stay indoors. Eventually, police convinced him to come out and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Authorities wouldn't release the man's name, only confirming that he is 42 years old. However, some neighbors identified the man as Scott Sherman and said that he is on a disability leave from a job in law enforcement.
Police say this is the second time in as many years Essex Court has been on lockdown. They also say they have responded to domestic disturbance calls at the same home in the past.
