A small knife was found by an Eagle Elementary School student on the floor of a bus just days after an online threat forced school officials to close the high school in the same district, police say.
District officials sent a message to the school community on Tuesday stating the small knife was found on the floor of Bus Y as students were disembarking at the school.
According to school officials, an Eagle student swiftly brought the knife to the bus driver and to his attention without any incident.
District officials say the small knife was not brought into the school.
Transportation was alerted, the driver made a report, and the director of transportation notified the proper school officials, the message said.
Police were then contacted as a precaution and an investigation commenced, officials say.
The district sent a message to the elementary school community saying in part, "It has been determined that this did not originate from an Eagle student. The bus is utilized for several schools in the district, and the investigation is continuing."
However, parents of high schoolers in the district say they did not receive any notification from the school.
Donna Rosado, of Medford, says she had to find out about the incident on Facebook.
"Where's our notification that there was a knife found?," Rosado said.
Her daughter, Anna Rosado, says the school didn't tell the students anything, but were on a completely a different bus when school was dismissed.
"We got off the bus like normal, in the afternoon we were confused because we got on the bus and everything was different," Anna Rosado said.
Donna Rosado now says she doesn't feel like her child is safe.
The incident comes after Patchogue-Medford High School was closed Monday after the district received an "unsubstantiated" threat. There was another incident at the high school in December where 19 bullets were found.
"This is not good, these are out kids, we put them in your hands to be safe," Donna Rosado said. "And they come back and say, 'This happened, this happened, that happened.'"
Suffolk County police released a statement saying, "An Eagle Elementary School student found a knife on the floor of a bus while en route to school on March 14. The student notified the bus driver who gave the knife to a member of the school security staff, who then notified police. There are no known threats at this time."
