Shots were fired in a basement in North Massapequa early Sunday morning, police say.
The incident took place at 12:45 a.m. in an apartment at 2 Sussex Avenue, according to authorities.
Police say 57-year-old Steven Frigand used a semi-automatic rifle to fire multiple rounds from his basement in the direction of two neighboring houses.
Police say a bullet struck the back of exterior of one of the homes, while another entered the living room of the second home. However, no one was hurt during the shooting.
When police arrived, the suspect allegedly refused to leave. But a short time later, the man surrendered.
Residents in the neighborhood told News 12 Long Island that Frigand was a family friend of the homeowner, who rented his basement apartment to him around a month ago.
“He needed a place to stay and opened his house to him. I'm sure he never expected this,” said a resident.
Other residents said they are grateful that the situation did not end tragically. They also praised the police for their quick response.
Police say Frigand is charged with two counts of reckless endangerment and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He will be arraigned on Aug. 21 at First District Court in Hempstead.
